Sarah Shumate
Lead Teacher TK/K
Sarah is thrilled to be returning for her second year as the lead TK/K teacher in the Leo class at Rising Sun. This is her tenth year as a lead teacher, her fifth year in Montessori, and her second year with TK/K. She attended California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo for undergrad and credentialing, and earned both her Early Childhood and Lower Elementary Montessori Certificates locally through the Montessori Training Center.
Sarah fell in love with Montessori education when she saw how capable even the youngest children can be when given the opportunity to try for themselves. She firmly believes in the Montessori philosophy of “teach me to do it myself.” She cares deeply about each of her students, and works hard to provide a safe, warm, and prepared environment, and to support them as they find peace and fulfillment in their work.
Outside the classroom, Sarah can be found hiking, paddleboarding, running, camping, rock climbing, and doing pretty much anything else outdoorsy with her husband and two children. She also loves experimenting with vegan baking recipes.
